Yesterday was a crazy whirlwind of a day!
The girls unit came in for the last class of the day, and I noticed one of my favorite kids wasn’t there. She’s supposed to be at Denney for a bit, and she generally loves to dance, so I peeked my head out the door and asked the guard if he knew where she was. He said she was in visitation waiting to see the chaplain, but then he came in to the room and called down to another guard. He told the guard to check with her because she would be devastated if she missed dance and may just want to come back up. The guard on the other end of the line must not have been too worried about it, because the guard on my end answered, “No seriously. Send her up. She’s been asking to see Emmy for weeks. I know she’s gonna want to be here.”
She came back up, and she gave me fuel to last a while. I hadn’t seen her since the showcase two weeks ago when she did some crazy awesome partner work with one of the boys and I danced to the poem I wrote for them. She was genuinely beaming yesterday when she walked in and squealed “Emmy!” She came up with so much enthusiasm I thought she was going to give me a bear hug. She stopped herself when she was about a foot away from me and told me how much she loved the poem and how cool it was that I did that for them. She said she reads it everyday, and my heart just about jumped out of my chest.
Because of some of the necessary rotations of detainees in our classes, I haven’t been able to see her weekly because they have to take turns. She said she was so sad she didn’t get to come last week, and she was scared that she wasn’t going to get to go this week either. It hit me that she’s been sitting with this love and enthusiasm for two weeks, waiting for the chance to share it with me. I let her know that starting next week I was going to have an all girls group every Wednesday, and she literally jumped up and down. It was one of the sweetest things I’ve ever seen.
I’m so grateful for the chance to expand this program! What a difference it will make in this girl’s life to have dance EVERY SINGLE WEEK.
